The executive search firm Heidrick & Struggles conducted interviews to explore the trends of C-level success.  One consistent finding across C-level roles surfaced. Once people reach the C-suite, technical and functional expertise matters less than leadership skills and a strong grasp of business fundamentals. Members of senior management are expected not only to support the CEO on business strategies, but also to offer their own insights and contribute to key decisions. Requirements for all the C-level jobs have shifted toward business acumen and softer leadership skills. To thrive as a C-level executive, individuals need to be good communicators, collaborators, and strategic thinkers.  At the C-level general business orientation trumps functional orientation.
